Chickens, ducks and the occasional Swan

My first blog post...this is long awaited.  Most likely not to my followers, since you haven't read anything by me yet, but mainly for me.  I mean, I created this blog on October 7th, it only took me two weeks to come up with something to write about...good grief. Ha! :)

So last night, while milking cows with our 15 year old high school boy employee, that has his own poultry business I came to learn that chickens, ducks and other fine feathered friends are more than meets the eye.  I mean I grew up on a dairy farm and my entire life revolves around the fine bovine...my only knowledge of fowl is pigeons.  Which are not something to get excited about.  Let me also tell you that this boy has no knowledge of the popular, classic and the movie that kept me laughing through some tough times...Tommy Boy, but he sure knows his birds.

I learned that the color of the egg that a bird lays is not based on the color of their features, it is based on the color of their ear lobe.  You can ship a duck or any fowl, anywhere...for a price.  Your average duck can be shipped for $35.  A swan, which are pretty pricey themselves, can shipped for well over a few hundred dollars.  Also, I decided that I totally want a swan gracefully walking around the farm.  Why? For no good reason, just to say, "Hey, I have a swan."

At any rate, this kid has his "ducks in a row" sort of speak.  Smart, full of energy and ready to take on the world.  I remember being 15, how I long for that youth.  I know, I am not that old, but you will also learned that events in my life over the course of the last two years have aged me, mentally and physically.

So I decided to ask him the age old question, "Which came first, the chicken or the egg?"  All I got was a giggle from the young man.  However, he finally did say, "Everything is open to your own personal opinion and thoughts."  So true.

So, as I ponder what I will name my swan, I realize that with each passing day that I am pretty lucky to be hanging around with a kid that plans to make a million dollars by raising and selling ducks.  And he has given me renewed energy...something that I have been searching for.
